Larry Peltz, MD, a distinguished psychiatrist in the field of addictions, has agreed to present on his upcoming book.  The subject matter is "Mindfulness and Addictions".  The book will be published in the spring of 2013.  The subject  promises to expand our understanding of addiction and the role of mindfulness in its treatment.

Mindfulness and Addiction

Addiction is a term used colloquially to mean anything from a bad habit to dependence upon a substance or behavior that destabilizes lives and families.  It is a process which initially protects us from physical or emotional pain, but ultimately distances us from our feelings and relationships.  Various descriptors have been applied to addiction undefined disease, powerlessness, craving or trance undefined but none cannot fully capture its essence.  Only by seeing the nature of a complex and shape -shifting problem can we begin to address it.

Mindfulness is a quality of nonjudgmental awareness that allows us to honor each moment just as it is.  It is a skill which can be developed by anyone.  Mindfulness practices allow us to look directly at our experience, illuminating and investigating our suffering as opposed to avoiding it.

Through lecture, case presentation, experiential exercises and discussion, this workshop will explore the place of mindfulness training in addiction treatment and in the recovery process.  This talk will consider the important role of suggestion in the teaching of mindfulness and meditation.
