Useful Biology to Know When Utilizing Clinical Hypnosis

Presenter:  Harvey Zarren, M.D., F.A.C.C.

Overview: Practitioners of Clinical Hypnosis can benefit greatly by understanding human biology and how it can be affected by interpersonal relationship and by the practice of Clinical Hypnosis. Foundational to that understanding is the knowledge that human biology functions in a manner that is encompassed by the word, “Wholeness.” In our biology physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social distinctions are not real biologically. We made the distinctions up based on limited knowledge, limited beliefs, and the need to communicate and to explore human experience. Anything affecting any part of an individual is affecting all of that individual biologically.

In addition, understanding human biology allows us to understand how our interaction with others affects the others’ biology either positively or negatively, as well as affecting our own biology positively or negatively. Thus our behavior and interactions as practitioners of whatever we practice has very real biological effects therapeutically or erosively, thus healing or not,  and aiding or impeding whatever therapies we apply from outside. All human interaction matters, and understanding the biology can assist our therapeutic endeavors.

Learning Goals

  1. Attendees will be able to describe the “Wholeness” of human biology based on gene expression.
  2. Attendees will be able to describe the biology of the human Autonomic Nervous System and how its function is impacted by Practitioners and the Utilization of Clinical Hypnosis.
  3. Attendees will be able to discuss the biology of pain, including perception and modulation, and how utilization of Clinical Hypnosis can alter acute and chronic pain.
  4. Attendees will be able to describe the biological connection of childhood trauma to adult physical distress including pain.
