Presented by Suzanne Candell, Ph.D., LP
Psychologist in Private Practice
Board Member, Minnesota Society of Clinical Hypnosis
When our patients can't sleep, their ability to heal psychologically and physically is stalled. When our patients are complex, presenting with trauma histories, pain, or both, the importance of helping them sleep better requires addressing particular impediments to sleep that standard treatments for insomnia overlook, and may inadvertently aggravate. In this presentation, we'll focus on identifying the unique needs of complex patients with insomnia, and explaining hypnotic strategies to enable their better sleep. After reviews of relevant empirical information and identification of hypnotic strategies, we'll delve into de-identified cases to illustrate how to use hypnosis for insomnia in complex cases.
Learning Objectives
Explain two fundamentals of the physiology of sleep
Describe three elements of useful interventions for insomnia and explain how hypnosis can be used to enhance delivery of these elements
Identify three common sleep impairments in complex patients (trauma survivors, individuals with chronic pain) and explain hypnotic strategies to address
About Dr. Candell
After earning a BA in comparative literature from Brown University, Dr. Candell volunteered with a rape crisis service where she engaged in what she describes as the most rewarding work experience she had during that time. It motivated her to return to school to become a psychologist.
In 1997, she achieved a master's equivalency and was licensed as a psychologist. She earned her PhD in Psychology from the University of MN, Department of Psychology, in 2003.
Today, the various streams of her academic and life experience flow together in her work as a psychologist - the art of using language to connect and to understand, a passion for aiding in recovery from trauma, continued immersion in the psychological and psychobiological literatures, and ongoing fascination with the interconnectedness of mind and body in healing.
