Peter B Bloom, MD

 

Peter B. Bloom, MD is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. A graduate of Cornell University, he received his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine. Shortly after his internship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), he served on active duty in the US Naval Reserve Medical Corps. After returning from the military, he then completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in gastroenterology all at Penn. Finding the mind/body relationship and psychotherapy central to his interests, he completed his residency in psychiatry at both at HUP and the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.

During his transition from internal medicine to psychiatry, Dr. Bloom took his first course in clinical hypnosis from Penn's Graduate School of Medicine. The rest is history. He is past president of the International Society of Hypnosis (ISH), Fellow of both the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and the Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis and past president of the American Board of Medical Hypnosis. Dr. Bloom is a foreign member of the Swedish Hypnosis Society and honorary member of many others including the European Society of Hypnosis in 2008. He is on the editorial boards of the several journals including the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis and the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis. In 2001, he co-edited the International Handbook of Clinical Hypnosis with colleagues Graham Burrows, and Robb Stanley of Australia published by John Wiley and Sons. He has lectured extensively internationally for many years and has published chapters and articles on a number of topics expressing his primary interest in clinical psychiatry, psychotherapy and hypnosis.

He has received many awards over the years including the ISH Pierre Janet Award for Clinical Excellence and culminating in the ISH's highest award The Benjamin Franklin Gold Medal.

Dr. Bloom is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and is an active member of the Department of Psychiatry at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. He continues his private practice in psychiatry since 1971 and his teaching at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
