Hypnosis and Weight
Management
Deirdre Barrett, PhD
Psychological interventions are powerful tools in weight loss and weight
control programs, facilitating enhanced awareness and control of eating
behaviors. Research has found that two techniques are the most effective in
helping people to lose weight: 1) cognitive/ behavioral strategies and 2)
hypnosis/imagery/visualization. Studies on large groups of people find that
combining the two techniques is most effective; however some individuals are
helped more by one or the other. Dr. Barrett will discuss the use of various
techniques with differing individuals.
Deirdre Barrett, Ph.D. is a psychologist on the faculty of The Cambridge
Health Alliance and Harvard Medical School’s Behavioral Medicine Program. She is
Past President of both the International Association for the Study of Dreams and
the American Psychological Association’s Div. 30, The Society for Psychological
Hypnosis. Dr. Barrett has written three books: The Committee of Sleep
(Random House, 2001); The Pregnant Man and Other Cases from a
Hypnotherapist’s Couch (Random House, 1998); and Waistland (Norton,
2007). She is the editor of two additional books, The New Science of Dreaming
(Praeger/Greenwood, 2007) and Trauma and Dreams (Harvard University
Press, 1996).

Pediatric Hypnosis in the
Hospital and in the Office
Robert Deutsch, PhD
Hypnosis can play an integral role when teaching children and
family members how to help themselves increase comfort, heal, and empower
themselves. Whether in a private practice office or hospital setting, there are
myriaf applications where the integration of a hypnotic intervention and the
teaching of self-hypnosis provide a significant advantage in the treatment
experience for kids, families, and staff as well. Dr. Deutsch will provide an
overview of pediatric hypnosis, followed by several video presentations of
children helped by hypnosis. The multi-media presentations will include
the integration of pediatric hypnosis in a variety of challenging situations
experienced by kids and their family members, including sleep difficulty,
attentional difficulty, anxiety and pain management, palliative care, and
end-of-life care.
Bob Deutsch, Ph.D. is a psychologist in private practice in West Hartford, CT.
He is a member of the Cancer Care Team in the Department of
Hematology/Oncology at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford,
CT, where he is on the Medical Staff. Dr. Deutsch is a member of the
Faculty for the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Hypnosis
Workshops, has developed and taught a Pediatric Hypnosis Workshop Series at CT
Children's Medical Center, and has offered adult and pediatric hypnosis
workshops in a variety of settings. He is an Approved Consultant for the
American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. .
